Dr. Fiachra Ó’Súilleabháin Delivers Insightful Talk on Diversity and Inclusion at CKT

Yesterday, as part of our lead-up to Cork Pride, CKT had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Fiachra Ó’Súilleabháin for an insightful discussion on diversity, inclusion, and equality. Dr. Ó’Súilleabháin, with his extensive expertise, offered a deep dive into the complexities of adoption, surrogacy, and fostering for LGBTQ+ couples.

Dr. Fiachra Ó Suilleabháin is a tenured College Lecturer/Assistant Professor and Vice-Head of School (Strategic Data and Communication) in the School of Applied Social Studies, University College Cork. A professionally qualified, CORU registered Social Worker since 2002, he teaches modules on gender, sexualities and LGBT+ matters.

His presentation explored the significant challenges that still confront many in the LGBTQ+ community when trying to start or expand their families. Despite the legal advancements in recent years, Dr. Ó’Súilleabháin highlighted that hurdles remain. His talk underscored the resilience and determination that many LGBTQ+ individuals demonstrate in their pursuit of family life.

In addition to addressing contemporary issues, Dr. Ó’Súilleabháin also provided a historical overview of gay rights in Ireland. He celebrated the progress achieved while also acknowledging the ongoing efforts needed to ensure full equality. His insights were both educational and motivating, reinforcing the necessity of continuous advocacy for inclusion and understanding.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Ó’Súilleabháin for sharing his valuable perspectives and to everyone who participated in the event. Your engagement plays a crucial role in advancing our collective understanding and support for diversity.
